Councilman Morton Inquiry Regarding Rec~ling Bins at
Exxon Station (Sandy Lake at Denton Tap)
I received a telephone call Monday from Tom Morton regarding
Exxon placing an unscreened dumpster on the Sandy Lake side of
their property. I responded to Mr. Morton that this was a
violation of the Zoning Ordinance and we would proceed to get the
dumpster removed or screened.
Following some internal discussion we realized that this dumpster
was, in reality, a recycling bin. In addition, this bin was
placed at Exxon following the efforts of Texas Waste Management
to encourage the commercial businesses of Coppell to recycle, and
as I understand from Ray Gonzales, staff liaison for this
program, the bin will be for "clean" cardboard waste and is not a
dumpster for deposit of refuse. McDonalds is also a part of the
recycling program and also has a bin that is unscreened.
My concern is that I was placed in a position of responding to
Councilman Morton on an individual basis with a limited
viewpoint, and had this com~)laint been handled through the proper
channels, I believe staff would have been able to respond with a
more complete picture of the problem and perhaps suggested a
different course of action.
I have contacted Ray Gonzales regarding Mr. Morton's inquiry and
he will be discussing the concern with Steve Goram.
At your direction, I have not contacted Exxon at this time, but
would suggest that we discuss the problem internally to determine
our course of action prior to any enforcement.
Please advise and I will proceed.
