Consider approval of awarding Bid/Contract #Q-O798-01 to Durable Specialties, Inc. in
the amount of $82,700.00 for the installation of a traffic signal at Belt Line
Road/Airline Drive; and authorizing the Mayor to sign.

This project consists of the construction of a permanent traffic signal at the intersection of Belt Line
Road and Airline Drive. The first time this project was advertised no bids were received. Because of
the timeline involved with the employment of approximately 800 employees at the new IBM building,
the City proceeded with the installation of a temporary signal light. This was done to insure safe
turning movements at the corner of Belt Line Road and Airline Drive for the opening date of August
10, 1998.
The project was readvertised and one bid was received and opened on July 29, 1998 from Durable
Specialties, Inc. This project was bid with three options:
Option 1 $79,700.00 with 180 calendar days
Option 2 $82,700.00 with 60 calendar days --
Option 3 $81,700.00 with 90 calendar days
With the cost differential of only $3,000.00 and a difference of 60 calendar days, staffs recommends
approval of Option 2 with 60 calendar days. This will allow us to synchronize this light with the
others along Belt Line/Denton Tap to enhance the progress of traffic. The temporary stop light is not
synchronized with the other traffic lights. Staff will be available to answer any questions at the
Council meeting.
