CONSTRU CTION
First Progress Meeting Held
The first monthly scheduled meeting with the
contractor and the consultant was held on
November 17, 1998. The meeting is an
opportunity to discuss the issues on the project,
insure the project is on schedule and identify
and address any major concerns. Our agenda
for the first meeting was: 1) review progress of
work 2) review schedule 3) review pay request
4) project issues 5) public relations and 6)
questions. It was generally felt by all attending
the meeting that the project is currently on
schedule.
What Happened Last Month ?
Approximately 2,000 linear feet of storm drain
pipe has been installed. Thi~ generally runs
from Fountain View Place to Meadow Run and
around the Moore Road intersection. Many of
you may have noticed a water line was hit at
the Minyard Shopping Center on November
12, 1998. The water line was hit by a Lone
Star Gas subcontractor while installing a new
gas line on the south side of Sandy Lake Road.
Because of the time to isolate the water flow to
the break the actual repair did not begin until
approximately eight o'clock that evening.
Current Issues
The current major issue that has been
identified by ali parties is the approach to
lowering the existing 16" water line. The blue

pipe to be used in the relocation of the existing
16" water line. City forces have been
uncovering the water llne in various locations
and surveying to check the depth of the
existing 16" water line to determine exactly
what sections absolutely have to be lowered.
This is an attempt to inconvenience as few
people as possible along Sandy Lake Road
while lowering the 16" water line. We have
identified some businesses in the Shopping
Center at Moore Road and Sandy Lake Road
that have their water services off of the 16"
water line. During the lowering of the 16"
water line, a temporary water line will be
installed to those businesses to in.~ure
continuous water flow during the lowering of
the 16" water line. The only shut down of the
water flow will be a short time to transfer
services from the 16" to the new temporary
water line.
Tree Removal
Numerous trees along Sandy Lake Road have
been marked with an orange 'X'. On Friday,
November 20, 1998 those trees were identified
to be removed for the reconstruction of Sandy
Lake Road. There are 151 trees marked for
removal. This is down slightly from the
original count of 168 trees. While that is a
substantial amount of trees to be removed,
since the beginning of the Sandy Lake Road
design in 1992, there has been a plan to
landscape Sandy Lake Road once the roadway
project is complete. Several of you may have
even attended the numerous landscape
meetings in 1993/94. The current plan for the

landscaping calls for approximately 475 canopy
trees of oak or aristocrat pear species and over
1600 ornamental trees such as red bud and
crepe myrtle species. The current plan also
calls for approximately 90 trees near the south
side of the intersection of Sandy Lake Road
and MacArthur where the current drainage
ditch exists. So while a large amount of trees
will be removed, there are plans to attempt to
replace the removed trees with a subsequent
project after the reconstruction of Sandy Lake
Road. The actual scope of the landscaping and
the total number of trees to be replanted will
be f'malized in the year 2001 as the
reconstruction of Sandy Lake Road is being
completed.
Utility_ Relocations
The yellow pipe on the south side of Sandy
Lake Road is a Lone Star Gas line being
installed by a private contractor. That is not
part of the City's contract but is a separate
Lone Star Gas Company contract. However, if
you have any concerns about what is taking
place I will be happy to contact Lone Star Gas
on your behalf. Texas Utilities is in the process
of marking locations and relocating existing
power poles. As part of the relocations, TU's
contractor will be removing some branches on
trees that are not being removed with this
construction, but is necessary to trim branches
back to allow for the construction of the new
TU distribution lines.
Next Month
In the coming month you should anticipate the
following work taking place:
1) Removal of the trees marked with the
orange 'X'.
2) Additional storm drain installation.
3) Lowering of the 16" water line.
4) Construction of the new 30" City of
Coppell water line.
5) Beginning construction of the inlets.
6) Continuation of the Lone Star Gas
relocations.
7) Relocation of the Texas Utility power poles
on the north side of Sandy Lake Road.
8) Move in of contractor's construction
trailer. It is anticipated the construction
trailer will be on the south side of Sandy
Lake Road near the Trailwood Lane
intersection.
9) Hiring of an Inspector strictly dedicated to
Sandy Lake Road.

Road along with other road construction
