Re: Project #ST 93-02
Sandy Lake Road Paving, Drainage, and Water System Improvements
KHA No. 06940600
Dear Ken:
In preparation of the additional plan sheet for the first 16" water line lowering and the
exhibits for temporary domestic services for the strip shopping center east of Moore
Road and the UPS center, I have come across several items that require your
consideration.
You may recall from our December monthly meeting that there was some confusion
regarding the removal and replacement of the sanitary sewer manhole at station
15+77.13 (sheet 2A). The contractor raised the question of why this was necessary
since the plans also show plugging the line entering the manhole from the west. When
I prepared the new 16" water line sheet, I discovered that the 8" sanitary sewer line
west of the manhole in question was originally planned to be abandoned. I have
reviewed the plans and spoken briefly with Mr. Glen Hallowell regarding the need to
keep this line in service, and I have not been able to find any justification for doing so.
If this is true, I recommend plugging and abandoning the line and removing the
existing manhole in question. Depending upon the condition of the existing lines
entering the manhole from the south and leaving the manhole to the north, a sleeve
and new section of line could be used to join these lines, or a completely new line
could be used. Please verify that there are no existing service connections to this
sanitary sewer line upstream of the manhole. If no existing or planned future service
connections exist, I will prepare a Request for Prices for this work.
On sheet 11 of the plans (see attached), an existing 8" sanitary sewer line is called out
as "...to be relocated by others.' It is my understanding that this line is to be (or
already has been) relocated to the south. As its position will affect the alignment of
the 6" temporary domestic service line to be constructed for service of the strip
shopping center, please verify and sketch on the attached plan sheet the approximate
location of the relocated 8" sanitary sewer line. This will allow me to proceed with
setting the horizontal and vertical alignment of the temporary service line.

Prior to Christmas, I received a phone call from Mr. Alford Main of M-Co
Construction, Ed Bell's utility subcontractor. Mr. Main stated that there would be a
lead-time of 6 to 8 weeks for the 16" gate valves to be cut in. This lead-time is for
the standard 16" gate valve with the attached bypass valve. Mr. Main further stated
that he could use a 16" gate valve without an attached bypass valve and use fittings
and a separate bypass valve, but this configuration would not fit in the standard vault.
This 16" gate valve is immediately available, and he can proceed if the city will allow
a valve vault modification. Please review the attached sketch and inform me of your
decision on whether or not to allow the modified vault. The price proposal that
Robert Weber recently submitted was applicable for either 16" gate valve option.
Thank you very much for your assistance with these matters. I look forward to
continuing to work with you in 1999.
Very truly yours,
Kimley Horn and Associates, Inc.
