Vehicle Signals
Standard Ihree-section 9" signat faces are designed ior
normat street and hignway use where traffic moves at
moderate speeds. 12" signal faces are recommended
when a greater target effect is required. The ManuaJ on
Uniform Traffic Controt Oevices suggests :hat 12" signals
be used in [he following applications:
(1) at intersections with 85 percentile approach speeds
exceeding 40 mph,
(2) at intersection where signalization might be
unexpected,
(3) for special problem locations such as those with
conflicting or competing background lighting,
(4) at intersections where drivers may view both traffic
control and lane control signals simultaneously,
(5) for all arrow indications.
8" and 12" sections are often combined for special
applications.
Single-section flashing red or yellow signals are used as
beacons where traffic conditions do not warrant full-rime
control or where a traffic hazard exists. Single-section, or
combinations of green arrow, red X or yellow X lane
control signals are used on expressways, ramps, and
main arteries to provide more efficient roadway use.
Single-sections also can be assembled in special
combine[ions for toll-booths, construction barriers, parking
garages, car washes, or other off-highway applications.

Description
The :.ightweight. one-piece housings, doors, and v~sors are of
ultraviolet-stabilized polycarbonate resin. The housings are
inlect~on molded with integral ~op, ~ottom, and sides. Color ~s
impregnated in the material, wnicn means it nevers needs
painting, is Onaffected by scratches, and is impervious to
corrosive atmospheres (such as that found in coastal areas'l.
Dcors are one-piece and are grooved to accommodate a one-
piece and are grooved to accommodate a one-piece gasket wnic,q
makes the signal weathe ,rproof and dust-tight. The lens is held in
the door by a gasket, four stainless steel screws, and clips.
Reflectors are available in Alzak® or silvered glass, and have
snap-out assembly and quick disconnect leads for easy
maintenance. The lamp receptacle can be rotated 360 degrees fer
filament alignment. To simplify alignment of the signal and assure
positive locking, the integral locking rings are adiustab'ie in 5
degree steps.
Ribbing is provided on top and bottom for structural stability, with
additional ribs [nsi~.e the housing. Reicfor. cerfle~t plates for top
and bottom are offered to provide even more stability.
All sections have cored holes for mounting backplates, and all
major components are interchangeable with Traffic Control
Technologies' aluminum signals. The signals are adaptable for
span wire or mast arm suspension, side of pole, or post top
mounting. Being 50% lighter than aluminum signals makes them
especially suitable for span-~.ir,e mounting. ,
Vertical and horizontal mounting is provided Ior.by a universal
mounting arrangement. All hardware is stainless steel including
the hinge pins used for reinforcement in the hinge lugs. (For
selection of visors and lenses, please refer to "Visors and
Lenses,' p. 280/1-4).

SPECIFICATiONS
GENERAL:
The McCainSeries 1000 Pedestrian Signals shall be illuminated by the use of standard A21 long lite traffic signal lamps. Its
construction shall consist of a housing, one piece door with vandal proof sun screen, and a single piece double parabolic reflector.
The McCain Series 1000 Incandescent Pedestrian Signal is designed to meet and exceed ITE standards, and offer Iow maintenance
and increased durability. Series 1000 components are co'mpatibte with standard signal hardware and are interchangeable with
existing units of simitar construction.
HOUSING:
Wilt be die cast from corrosion resistant spec alloy. The housing
will be free from defects such as heat check and sharp burrs.
Four mounting lugs will be integrally cast into the top and bottom
area at equal distances, permitting the door to hinge from either
side. All interior mounting locations will be symmetrically
positioned, allowing the rotation of components when using the
bi-directional McCain "Quick Mount". Each housing will have a
72 teeth serrated boss at each end for use with standard signal
hardware. Each boss wit! have reinforcing ribs projecting the
load bearing stress to the entire housing.
SIGNAL DOOR:
Two styles of Pedestrian Signal Doors will be available:
1)
VANTAGE DOORTM- Will be injection molded from ultraviolet stabilized, flame retardant, permanently colored, black, Lexar'~
Our unique design incorporates the Vantage VisorTM with the signal door to create a one piece superior system. The Vantage
SystemTM assures the pedestrian the optimum message display with the least restriction.
The Vantage Visor is a network of horizontal and diagonal louvers equally spaced which in turn create precisely shaped cells
that provide optimum sun and vandal protecticn. Unlike formed and chemically welded, crate type visors, the Vantage Visor is
one piece injectioq molded. Th is process assures superior u niformity and strength, essential under changing conditions.
The entire Vantage System provides the user with a single piece corrosion proof and vandal resistant signal face that will be
maintenance free for many years of service.
2)
ALUMINUM DOOR - Will be cast from corrosion resistant, aluminum alloy.
The signal doors will be machined and powder coated as described in the
painting specification. To provide protection against sun phantom and vandal-
ism, the door will be fitted with a protective crate b/pe visor, the Protect-A-
CrateTM will be fabricated with formed, black, Lexan~, permanently colored a~,d
uitraviolet stabilized. The formed Lexan~will be assembled and chemically
welded to assure maximum strength. The welded Protect-A-Crate will then be
enclosed in an aluminum mounting frame that directly mounts to the signal door
with Ihe use of stainless steel screws. The Aluminum Door and Prctect-A-Crate
are shown in the pictures of this brcchure.
Mounting of the Vantage Door and Aluminum Door will be through the use of
stainless steel detent type clevis pins and eyebolt/wingnut assemblies. The door
and eyebolt assemblies can be removed and rotated without the use of any tools.
This function becomes apparent when using the "Quick Mount" bi-directional
hardware, thus eliminating the need for left or right mountings.
OPTICAL:
The optical system snail consist of three major ccmponents: 'i ) Lens, 2) Reflector, 3) Lamp Socket Assembly.
1)
LENS - The lens shall have a message displayed when the signal is illuminated. The size and color shall conform to the latest
ITE standards. The international symbols and word legend will be available. The Hand/Don't Walk will be Portland Orange in
color and the Walking Man/Walk will be Lunar White in color. The entire area around the legend will be blacked out and will be
free of any light projecting through in areas other than the legend. There will be two types of lens materials available.
% A. STANDARD - 0.187" tempered glass with one side textured for even light distribution. This lens will have a ceramic fired
/ mask to ensure permanent adhesion to the glass.
B. OPTIONAL-0.250" Protect-a-Glaze~Lexan~with atexturedfinishforeven lightdistribution. This lenswillhaveanorganic
painted mask to ensure proper adhesion to the lens.
Both lens will be fitted into the Vantage System and fitted with a one piece EPDM Sponge Gasket.
O
2)
REFLECTOR - The reflector shall be a polycarbonate
double parabolic type. The 0.25" polycarbonate sheet will
be textured on one side and will be vacuum formed into a
double parabolic cavity. After forming, a highly reflective
coating will be applied by vacuum metal deposition. After
aluminum deposition, a clear hard coating will be applied to
resist wear and scratching. The two parabolic cavities will
be separated by an aluminum divider and silicone gasket.
The divider will mate with the lens to prevent false illumina-
tion of the unlit message.
3)
LAMP SOCKET ASSEMBLY - The lamp socket assem-
bly will consist of two porcelain lamp sockets, an aluminum
heat dissipating mounting plate, and a terminal block. The
lamp sockets are precisely located to align the filament of
an A21 traffic signal lamp in the prefocused position of the
parabolic reflector. The Man/Don't Walk socket leads will
have one orange in color, and one white in color. The
Walking Man/Walk leads will have one blue in color, and
one white in color. The white wires will be connected
together as the common. The terminal block will be a three
position barrier type.
PAINTING:
All exterior surfaces shall be processed through a 5 stage pretreatment process, then electrostatically powder coated. The pretreat-
ment process wilt consist of a 1 ) Heated acid/alkaline deoxidizer, 2) Fresh water rinse. 3) Heater phosphate conversion coating, 4)
Fresh water rinse, 5) Dry in place non chromate conversion coating. Aher pretreatment apolyester T.G.I.C. powder will be applied
· · , O O ~ · ,
by use of e ectroslatic equipment. Once the powder is app ~ed ~t w~ll be oven cured at 350 - 400 F ,or a m~n~mum of 15 minutes.
This procedure will insure proper paint adhesion and increased durability.
WARRANTY:
The complete pedestrian signal with Vantage Visor including all internal components texduding traffic lamps) will be warranted for a
period of two (2) years from the date of original shipment against defects in workmanship/and or materials.

Handy quart
cartridges feature
a special nozzle to tiff
sawcut from the bottom up, allowing
encapsulation of the loop wires.
Also available in 5-gallon pails for
bulk pumping systems.
A properly installed detector
loop wire system ought to resist
the hostile environment of typical
roadway sawcuts. Yet it's common
for these systems to require pre-
mature replacement simply
because the sealant used was not
designed to encapsulate, protect,
and insulate the loop wires while
remaining flexible to withstand nor-
mal pavement movement.
3M Detector Loop Sealant has
been improved to give you this
added protection. It's been
improved to eliminate pinholes and
air pockets. It's been improved to
provide better adhesion to asphalt
and concrete. In short, it is the best
way to protect detector loop wires.
Doing the job right with 3M
Detector Loop Sealant saves you
time, money, and needless repair/
replacement headaches. Check all
the benefits, see why you should
be using this outstanding product
for your traffic control installations.
Improved encapsulation. By eliminat-
ing pinholes and air pockets, your
detector loop wires are completely
encapsulated in a tough, rui3ber-
tike environment. This protects and
insulates the loop wires, and pre-
vents moisture penetration.
Improved asphalt compatibility. Over
;ime. other sealants can attack the
asphalt, resulting in a weakened
roadway around the detector wires
and eventually -- loop
replacement.
Excellent adhesion to asphalt and con-
crete. A stronger bond is formed
between the sealant and the road.
It won't shrink or p~ll out of sawcut
grooves. It's also non-stringing, so
traffic lanes can be immediately
re-opened after sealant applica-
tion.
· No curing expansion. Improved 3M
Detector Loop Sealant takes all
the guesswork out of gauging a
proper fill. No curing expansion
means less waste and neater
work.
· Moisture cures to a long-tasting seal.
The tough, rubber-like seal resists
weather, abrasion, oils, gasoline,
anti-freeze solutions, brake fluids
and road salt.
· One-part formula. No mixing, mea-
suring or heat is required. It's
ready to use immediately.
· Fast and easy to apply. A special noz-
zle fills sawcut grooves from the
bottom up. Sealant flows smooth
and easy whether applied by con-
ventional cartridge gun or bulk
handling pump equipment.
Adheres to damp as well as dr,/
surfaces, asphalt or cement.
4, Remains permanently flexible. Long-
lasting formulation won't embrittle
with age. It moves when !he pave-
ment moves Io help prevent dam-
age to the loop wires and
pavement.
+ Stabilizes loop wire motion. Perma-
nently positions ioop wires relar, ive
to one anotn, er, preventing false
calls.
+ Temperature stable. Won't degrade
in high temperature or fracture at
',ow temperatures -- even as Iow
as -40°E
steps to correctly prepare
the deteCtor loop for traffic.
1. Cut the loop.
Instal//obp wires.
2. Flush out debris and blow out
standing water.
4. Fill sawcut w/th 3M Detector
Loop Sealant.
