ST8601-CS 871026October 26, 1987 COPPELL PUBLIC WORKS MEMORANDUM TO: FROM: RE: Shohree Daneshmond, Civil Engineer Per Birdsall, Street Foreman Intersection of MacArthur Blvd. & Mapleleaf Dr. The following are our reconmendations for signage and markings for the aboved referenced intersection: 1) Install more white buttons on the turn lane on MacArthur Blvd. as described in your October 20 memorandum. 2) Paint median nose curb yellow to promote visibility. In our opinion, these recommendations are the only actions required at this time. The "Keep Right" sign as to its placement is questionable. The manual states that signs should be mounted at approximately at right angles to the direction of, and facing traffic that they are intended to serve. When this sign is mounted at the angle needed to face traffic on Mapleleaf, it could become a hazard during hours around sunset. The "Do Not Enter" sign is not needed in our opinion. The measures in this recommendation taken should eliminate the need for this sign. Placement of either sign: entails purchasing materials for which there are limited funds; increase maintenance needs because they are obstructions, which must be weedeated around; and creates a cluttered appearance, which by city ordinance/sign ordinance is undersirable. The signs could be installed at a later date, if the problem is not resolved by our recommendation but with reservations by Public Works staff. The following observations and options should be considered before placement of additonal signage: 1) MacArthur Blvd. is presently inadequately lighted, which is being considered at the present time. 2) Traffic button placement on MacArthur Blvd. is iminent. Buttons with white and red reflectors could be placed on that portion of MacArthur between Sandy Lake & Mapleleaf, which would also affect the alley in that area where motorist have been observed going the wrong way. 3) A dashed strip could be applied to channelize motorists to avoid striking the median nose. 4) The median nose could be aesthetically treated by means of landscaping (bushes), which would make the nose more visible. 5) There is a similiar intersection at Starleaf. Will we have to treat that one also? Please take into consideration the preceding in reviewing this recommendation and consider the impact thoroughly. Your cooperation in this matter will be appreciated. We are awaiting your response before installation/application takes place.
