School Zone on Moore Road
In recent conversations with Dana Kemp of the Street Department
regarding our recommendations in a June 30 memo, some questions
have been asked that need to be addressed.
In making our study and recommendations on the school zone
flashers, it was not intended for us to provide plans,
details, specs, etc. at this point in time, or was it? Do
you want us to provide plans and specs, advertise, and award
bids?
Dana indicated that CISD (Dr. Stanfield) wanted to move the
flashers further north and south in each direction from where
we have them shown. We see no reason to move them, but if
you choose to elongate the school ~e, additional signs will
be required on the streets intersecting onto Moore Road.
Dana indicated a school crosswalk may be located between
drive to fire station and school's south drive. We have no
objection as long as it is in accordance with the MUTCD
(Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices).
Dana asked as to the type equipment we wanted for the
flashers, and for the emergency flashers. Do you want us to
specify this equipment for you to be able to advertise for
bids? Or, is the spec just for your information?
Question was "will school flasher and emergency flasher be on
same pole?" Our answer is, if that is how you desire it, we
can provide information for construction of poles, signs and
flashers as a complete unit.

Will the city have to run conduit? If the flashers require
power to operate, yes the city, or whoever installs the
flashers will have to run conduit. It was not done on the
Moore Road project since it was not known where the flashers
would be located. A suggestion you may want to consider is
the "solar" powered flasher units.

How is emergency flasher activated? It could be done a
number of ways. It could be tied to an alarm system at the
fire station, electronically controlled or even a manually
operated switch. The fire chief may have some input as to
how he may want it designed.
In summary, it was our assumption we were to provide
recommendations only regarding the installation of the school
zone flashers. If it was intended that we provide plans and
specs for bidding purposes, then we apologize for the
miscommunication.
D0 you wish us to proVide further information? we will make
every effort to try to get what you require prior to the school
opening in September.
