Bicycle Lanes
Dear Ms. Sylo:
I am writing in response to your letter of September 29, 1993 regarding the inclusion of bicycle lanes on Sandy
Lane Road. Your recommendation to provide ' an alternate construction bid specification for a design that would
accommodate future bicycle traffic at the Elm Fork Trinity River Bridge" is not a workable solution.
In order to provide for an alternate bid for bicycle lanes on the bridge we would have to prepare a second set of
bridge plans. Since the bridge is within the City of Dallas City limits, they would be the agency responsible for
all added costs involving the bridge. The City staff has verbally indicated that in as much as the City of Dallas
constituents would not receive benefits from a bicycle lane on Sandy Lake Road, they would not be interested
in the additional costs involved.
The only way the County could provide plans for an alternate design would be if the City of Coppell and/or the
City of Carroliton singly or jointly requested that we provide plans for bicycle lanes on the Elm Fork Trinity
River Bridge and agree to provide the funding for this alternate design and the added construction cost if the lanes
are to be included.
It is estimated that the additional engineering design cost would be around $10,000. The additional construction
cost for 2.5 feet added on each side of the bridge has been estimated to be about $200,000. Please feel free to

The IH-35 structure is the responsibility of the State Department of Transpor~tion and the County has no current
involvement in its ultimate improvement.
