Water & Sewer PVC Pipe - Reaction to UV Radiation
Steve, I have reviewed data submitted by Randy Grose from Uni-Bell. ~nis report
is 10 years old and was conducted for two years. This test concluded that after
two years of severe exposure to UV light and extren~ weather condition mt nad
little affect on its impact strength, tensile strength, modulus of tensile
elasticity, and flatting & stiffness.
However, after reviewing this data along with A.S.T.M., C.O.G., specifications
and several discussions with the Texas Highway Dept., City of Plano, City of
Dallas, and the City of Carrollton. The potential problems that occur when
using this pipe are as follows:
1) Pipe becomes brittle and susceptible to cracking during backfilling and
compaction.
2) When future taps are performed in the faded portion of the pipe, fraying
may occur.
With all items taken into account, the only way I would feel comfortable ~ming
this pipe is as follows:
1) Pipe be installed in one area
2) Ail faded pipe be T.V. cameraed
3) Pipe installed with faded side down
4) Faded pipe be installed in area outside of pavement
Steve, seeing that Public Works has the responsibility of the long term main-
tenance and operation of the pipes, I will await your decision.
