In response to the memo from Councilman Tom Morton dated May 1Z, 1986, I would
like to address the following Section IO-$-IZ of the Coppell Sign Ordinance states that:
Nothing in this chapter shall be construed to prevent the display of a national
flag or state flag, or to limit flags, insignia, legal notices, or informational,
directional, or traffic signs which are legally required or necessary to the
essential functions of government agencies.
The staff interprets this section to mean that any national or state flag can be flown
without a variance from the sign ordinance. This would include the placement of flag poles.
All of the locations listed in Councilman Morton's memo are at~~ng
national or state flags with the exception of the sales office ~'~ Sherwood Park~,~]'he
flags at the Sherwood Park sales office have been removed. ~ags and
locations are not in violation of the sign ordinance according to Section IO-~-IZ.
