RE: ~School Zone - Mockin{
Based on our rece~h~approved~October 1990) school zone criteria
this zone already exc~-~ma~_~-~e recommended maximum distance for
school zones. The minimum is 600 ft. and maximum is 1200 ft. The
basis for this is that if you minimize the distance as much as
possible the drivers going through will maintain a positive
awareness of the zone. The longer the zone the more likely the
individual driver will tend to increase their speed within the zone
therefore creating a potential safety hazard.
Staff spoke with Engineering concerning this matter and the only
concern expressed was the potential impact on the stop sign at
Oriole and Mockingbird. Shohre agreed that if this zone does
exceed the set maximum it should not be extended. We also spoke
with Captain Nix with the Police Department and he is of the
opinion that the extension of this zone is not needed as well.
Wi.th consideration to the co~ents from Engineering and Police, and
stafi's research into this subject matter, it is staffs
recommendation not to extend this school zone.
