TRAFFIC SIGNAL WARRANT STUDY
AT
DENTON TAP AND BETIIF~L ROAD
Location:
The intersection of Denton Tap and Bethel Road is in approximately the geographic center
of thc City of Coppell. Denton Tap is a North-South major thoroughfare passing entirely
through the City of Coppell. It conqccts to thc city of Lcwisviile on thc north by way of
SHI21. On thc south its alignment is continued on Bcltlinc Road which connects to the
City of Irving at the IH 635 intersection. Denton Tap is currently a 2 lane undivided 2 way
roadway. Bethel Road is a 2 lane, 2 way undivided major thoroughf,'tre extending west
from its intcrscctioq with Denton Tap and intersect with SH 12l west of Coppcll City
Limits. Both roadways will ultimately be expanded to 6 lane divided roadways.
Volume Dala:
A manual traffic volume count was conductcd at the intersection of Denton Tap and Bethel
Road during thc H.M and P.M. peak traffic periods. The count was conducted on Tuesday
February 2, 1988. Thc rcsnits of thc count arc given below.

Radar Study Data:
A radar spccd study was done on Wcdncsday February 3, 1988 in order to determine the
approach speed of traffic on Denton Tap Road. The results of the radar study are shown
on the atlachcd tabulation sheet. Thc 85th percentile speed was found to ix: 45 MPH.
Therefore thc "rural" curves m'c to bc used for warrant//9.
Signal Warrant Analysis:
Thc traffic volume data was applied to thc traffic signal warrants as given in thc Texas
Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Dcviccs with thc adjustmcnts as indicated by thc results
of thc radar study.
Result - Conclusion:
In stndy warrant #9, lhc one high hour crilcria arc met for one hour, the two high hour
criicria m'c met for 3 hours and thc fot,r high hot,r criteria arc met for five hours. Therefore
a signal is justified at thc intersection of Denton Tap and Bethel Road under warrant #9.
