The guntte phase of your svinning pool is one of
most critical steps in ~he construction of a new pool. The
gunite shell serves as the ,£ranee or backbone of the pool
around which all other construction phases depend upon.
#[~hout a sound shell a myriad o£ dtf£ioult to
problems can result. The equipment, me~hodolo~ and people
required for gunite var~ £ron one city to the ne~c and
usually evolve out of the requirements of the pool builder,
regional geolo9~ and available construction materials. The
follow,ns ia a brief description of the tvs processes that
are currently being used in the Central Texas Area.
The vet process, also known as Slhotorete* ~s one
me~hod used. Sand, rook, cement, voter and admixtures are
prmnl~ed in a truck to fern a soft $ce.cremn l~ke maes and
then unloaded into & hydraulic concrete pump. Zt ts then
pumped through 'a hose and out the noszle, which ts were the
air ~s added. The purpose o£ the alr is to dtrec~ and
disperse the stream of concrete. Some advantages of using
shotcrete are:
- strength and ~nish enhancing admixtures can be
be easily added to shotcre~e
- up to 50% stronger compressive and.£1exural
stranq~hs than dr~mixgunite
- conventional quality control techniques are used
- little or no rebound (rebound ia overspray mater-
ial that has no structural value and weakens the
shell if It ia not shoveled out)
- rougher £inish provides a stronger bond between
plaster and shell.
some d~sadvanteges are~
- vet mix ia more di£ficult to apply and
~han dry mix ..
- good servtoe from the material supplAer ia more
critical with Ihotcrete ~handrymix or g unite.
The dr~ nix process, commonly called
o~her me~hod used in ~1~ ~ea. ~t, process u,s. a
~etertng device to introduce ~malL tnorement~ of a d~ ~and
and c~ent ~i~e into a ~ber ho~e. ~ larger vol~e of.
on,pressed air blo~a ~is material t~ouqh a hove and out
the nozzle. This air t~ also used to direct and disperse
the ~ite material ~o water t~ added at the nozzle instead
- less eophiak~caked B~xinq and
- i2 t~ easier ~or ~e ore~ to apply and easier ~o
achieve ~e desired pool dimensions than wi~
ahotcrata.
Some disadvantages o~ ~nite ~e~
- because ~ere isn't anM ro~ or a~i~es im ~e
d~ mix compressive and ~le~ral atren~s are
less
- up to 1St more re~d ia generated. Rebound
a b~roduo~ of ~he ~ process ~at hag no
atren~ ~al~ou. to overapray d~ing a pain~ing
operation
- e~ra cara~s~ ~ t~en to remove ~i. rebo~d,
o~e~iae~pooketa or ve~ low atren~nterial
will resul2.
Most, but not all pool builders use the ~u~ite method.
They £eel it gives their customers the strongest most
trouble free shell available regardlenn cE price. Just an
specification sheets accompany pumps, heaters and deck
uteriale es should they accompany the ounite material.
Par~ of everM pool bulldern males presentation should be
current per£or~ance £eedback £rom an ob~ective independent
materials tenting lab on hip qunite material. Thin should
include' the mix design, results from control ~clinder
breaks and or results £rom & test panel core. Z£ ~his
infor~ation is not available, or worse yet if its impo~canoe
ie discounted by ~he builder or his representative, a red
£1ag o£ caution should go up.
Xn this day and age it zeus people are more..willinq to
tell you what you want to hear more than ever.
Un£ortunately, it becomes nors incumbent upon us as
consunern to educate ourselves before large purchases an
opposed to learning the hard way a~ter the purchase. The
intent of thim papmr ham bean to providm baokqround
information on gunite mo that you .o.an consider the builders
gunite Preference :Just as you ac ~is choice in pool pumps,
landscaping, or even price beC. ore migning m contract.
Currently, there are quality gunite subcontractors workinq
in the Central Texas ~t~ea.
Hopefully, it will be easier for
you to insure that you will see one of them building your
pool shell, the lost critical phase of swi~minq pool
construction, instead of soleone else.
