RE: Request for Engineering Services for Damaged Outflow Structure at Andrew
Brown, Jr. Community Park, East of Denton Tap Road.
The purpose of this memorandum is to request your assistance in providing engineering
design and a cost analysis for the repair to the outflow structure that is located at Andrew
Brown, Jr. Community Park, east of Denton Tap Road.
This outflow structure is located just north of the central lake of the park site along Denton
Creek, and was originally constructed by Univest in the early to mid 1980s. Over the course
of the last several years, damage has occurred to the structure through flooding and high
water along Denton Creek.
When functioning properly, the outflow structure allows water from the park site to flow into
Denton Creek should the park site become inundated from heavy rainfall. Conversely, the
outflow also plays an important function in not allowing water to enter the park when high
discharge flows occur along Denton Creek. This occurs when the Corps of Engineers
releases water from Lake Lewisville and Lake Grapevine.
With this outflow structure in disrepair, water is able to flow back into the park site when
Denton Creek's flow is high. In order to correct this problem, a design for these repairs is
needed. This will allow staff to solicit proposals from private contractors to repair this
infrastructure.
In an effort to be as cost effective as possible for this project, I would ask if the work
described above could be performed by City Engineering personnel. The Public Works
Department would help provide any existing plans, documents or assistance necessary to
ensure this project's success.
Please look at this project and see what assistance might be available from the Engineering
Department. A time schedule would be helpful in determining when a cost proposal could be
obtained from a contractor.
I would appreciate a written reply on this request by August 15, 1994. Thank you for your
