Re: Federal Funding for West Sandy Lake Road - Phase 2
Per our conversation on January 10, 2006, I want to confirm the direction you would like us
to proeceed regarding the remaining portion of West Sandy Lake Road It is my
understanding that the City has secured approximately $1 million in federal funding to aid in
the construction of this project. However, in order to obtain the funds, the portion of the
project constructed with the federal money would need to be designed to federal standards
For this reason, you are anticipating separating the project into two phases, and constructing
the section between the Intersections of the Coppell Roads, including the bridge over
Cottonwood Creek, with the federal funds As you know, we have been working on the
preliminary design plans for West Sandy Lake Road from Coppel! Road North to Denton
Tap Road, and we are approximately fifty percent complete with these plans Based upon
our understanding of the recent developments regarding the federal funding, there are a
couple of options for proceeding with our design
The first option \Nould be to temporarily suspend the remaining design completely until the
details of the impacts of utilizing the federal funding for a portion of this project are finalized
Once the details are finalized, we can proceed under an amended contract to complete the
design However, depending upon the length of the delay, an ammendment may be
needed, even if the federal funding is not utilized or does not affect the design
The second option would be to continue work on the preliminary plans However, as you
suggested, we would focus the design efforts on the section from Coppel! Road South to
Denton Tap Road This approach assumes that the effect on the design of the section
between the intersection of the Coppell Roads due to the federal funding does not impact
the horizontal and vertical alignments of the current design If either of these elements
change, then the effects could extend over a signifcant portion of the roadway east of
Coppel! Road South, resulting in a change to the completed design of that portion
We are open to either option that you believe would make this portion of the project proceed
as smooth as possible Also, if you have any other ideas or options for moving forward with
the design, we would be happy to entertain those ideas as well Please let me know, at your
earliest convenience, how you would like us to proceed
