At most locations the top 4 feet of the soil can be extremely unstable especially when soaked. 2. This plan is based on 29 CFR PART 1926 October 31, 1990 revision for excavations - final rule. Any deviations from this plan must be approved by ENTERPRISE ENGINEERS, INC.. This plan does not consider saturated soil. If saturated soil is encountered call Enterprise Engineers, Inc.. The plan must be modified in the case of saturated soil. THE STRENGTH OF THE BOX WILL BE INCREASED BY A FACTOR OF 1.5. 3. The cut back is designed to suit being open 72 hours or less. If heavy rains are forecast, the slope can be stabilized with a 6 mil polyethylene sheet. Tack the sheet down with spikes at 9 to 18 inches on center. 4. Do not allow the soil to become drenched if at all possible. If excessive rain is expected prepare the slope as in above. Allow a five day weather forecast to predict at least 3 days of clear weather before leaving the slopes uncovered. 5. The site should be inspected daily by a competent, trained observer for signs of a cave-in i.e. ground subsidence or surface tension cracks or any other abnormal situation. If such is found the trench should be evacuated immediately. Additional bracing should be used at locations where existing pipes cross the trench. Special precautions shall be used at a location where fill has been added previously. 6. Emergency exit ladders or steps should be provided every 25 feet of lateral travel. 7. Hydraulic shoring can be used where necessary. Hydraulic shoring shall be removed from the bottom up. Hydraulic shoring will be used in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. 8. All manhole locations should be protected by manhole boxes or hydraulic shoring. Either shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer recommendations. The strength of the installation should meet the same criteria as outlined on the plans. 9. All work will be executed in accordance with all local, state and federal regulations. The current OSHA CFR 29, 1926/1910, or the most recent revisions are incorporated as a part of the TRENCH SAFETY PLAN. It is recommended that a copy of the standards be kept on the job site. Additionally, it is recommended that a daily 5 minute safety meeting be held before starting operations. The work to be accomplished that day should be discussed with recommendations for safe practice during the day. Any near misses or accidents that occurred the previous day can be discussed and how to avoid a reoccurrence of them. 10. This area has the potential for ground water to occur at many locations. The contractor will be prepared to provide de-watering when the necessity arises. The contractor will notify the engineer when ground water is encountered. The engineer will proceed to the site when he is notified of the occurrence of ground water. The Engineer will provide guidance as required to achieve a safe work environment. 11.
