I guess the revisions look ok. Is this something that CanFer is going to do at their cost or will they request additional
money? It's my opinion that the work should be at their sole expense.

Ken,
Based on our previous discussions regarding the potential for voids resulting from Can - Fen's initial failed excavation, we have
reviewed the detail for connection of the 30 -inch influent line to the DeForest Lift Station. The detail in the construction plans
(Detail 3 on Sheet DM -4) shows a ductile iron wall pipe with a short segment of ductile iron pipe (2' -0" maximum) coming out
from the wall piece. This short ductile iron segment would be connected to the PVC influent line with either a mechanical joint or
flexible coupling. Under this scenario, the joint at the wall face and the joint between the ductile iron pipe and the PVC pipe
would provide some flexibility in the event of differential settlement. However, because of the failed excavation, we would
recommend extending the length of the ductile iron segment to span the soils disturbed during Can -Fen's initial excavation.
According to Rick O'Dell, this disturbed zone could extend as much as about 20 feet west from the west face of the lift station.
We have considered whether a single ductile iron pipe segment or multiple segments over the required distance would be more
effective. While multiple segments would give additional non -rigid point(s), this also creates more potential leakage locations,
We feel that spanning the entire distance with a single joint (if possible, depending on the actual distance) is the better
alternative.
I have attached a sketch for your review. We have made a slight modification to the call -out for the wall piece on the earth side
of the structure to clarify that this connection is to be a mechanical joint connection, in addition to showing an extension of the
ductile iron segment to beyond the limits of the disturbed soil.
If you would like to discuss this further or if you have any questions, please let me know. We can provide this sketch to Can -Fer
if the proposed solution is acceptable to the City
Thanks,
Erika
