COMMENTARY s l tsra G h-4y tical, particularly in the case of floor or roof systems, for the Building Official to require a load test (Chapter 20). Short of load tests, if time and conditions permit, an effort may be made to improve the strength of the concrete in place by suppkmental wet curing. Effectiveness of such a treatment must be verified by further strength evaluation using prooedur+ea previously discussed. It should be noted that core tests having an average of 85 percent of the specified strength are entirely realistic. To expect core tests to be equal to j', is not realistic, since differences in the size of specimens, conditions of ob- taining samples, and pia for curing, do not permit equal vahas to be obtained. The code, as staled, concerns itself with assuring sum - tural safety, and the i wbuctioa in 5.6 are aimed at that objective. It is not the function of the code to assign rrapoosibi ty for strength ddicieocies, whether or not they are such as to require corrective measures. Under the requirements of this section, cores taken to confirm structural adequacy will us=Uy be cater at ages later than thaw specified for determination of j'. Attention is directed to the need for using clean equipment and for cleaning forms and rei &wcemew thoroughly be- fore begiming to deposit concrete. In particular, sawdust, nails, wood pieces, and other debris that may collect inside the forms must be removed. Reinforcement must be thoroughly cka wd of ice, M. loose cwt, Mill soak, or other coatings. water should be removed from the forms. R5.8 — MhJM9 Concrete of uniform and satisfactory quality requires the materials to be thoroughly mixed until uniform in ap- pearance and all ingredients are distributed.
