WA MEMORANDUM

Welding joints is not recommended for ductile iron pipe since the heating and cooling
process with the high Carbon metal will make the pipe brittle. Attached is a copy of a
EBAA Iron product which will secure the slip joints. It appears that the joint separation
from differential contraction of the bridge versus the pipe is not an issue. It appears to
me that the best solution at this point may be to place two or three lateral metal
restraints at the existing openings for the diaphragms and connect directly to the pipe,
At the joint closest to the lateral restraints the pipe joints can be left as slip joints. At the
remaining joints Series 110OHD Split Megalug Restraints can be used to secure the
joints and transfer any lateral loading to the restrained locations.
I will discuss this with Martin Ledford and in the interim we will confirm the availability of
the Megalug product.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
install spigot end of pipe into the bell in the
nomol rMwer_
Disassemble one split Megalug restraint and
place both halves on the spigot side of the
joint. The lip of the restraint should always
face toward the bell. Reassemble the
clamps and plates to hold the two halves
together tightening the bolts at the Splits to
60 ft -ibs.
Disassemble the second Megalug restraint
(a split ring on the 6" and 8" sizes) and
place the halves around the pipe behind and
as close to the bell as possible. Make sure
the lip of the restraint faces the bell.
Reassemble the clamps and plates to hold
the two halves together, tightening the bolts
at the splits to 60 R -lbs. Align the split of
the first restraint with the split of the
second.
lasert the tie bolts That connect the
restraints. There should be a bolt at each
available bolt hole for maximum
distribution of the operating forces. Place
nuts on each end of each tie bolt.
Tighten the torque limiting twist Off nuts in
a clockwise direction (direction indicated
by arrow on top of nut) until all wedges are
in firm contact with the pipe surface.
Continue tightening in an alternate manner
until all of the nuts have been twisted off.
Tighten the nuts on the tie bolts until they
are snug against the restraint rings.
