Services: Drilled belled pier observation.
On this date, Terracon's representative arrived at the above referenced job site as scheduled for
drilled belled pier observation. Drilling rig arrived on site at 9:00 AM.
Terracon's representative observation that on this day, Trinity drilling made 3 attempts to complete
an 18 inch diameter pier shaft with a 54 inch diameter bell at a depth of 10 feet from existing
grade. Locations of the 3 attempts spanned the site. All 3 of the shafts encountered caving soils
at a depth ranging form 7 to 9 feet below existing grade. At the pier @ A/1, ground water seepage
was encountered at 8.2 feet making the shaft sensitive to sloughing conditions and impossible to
maintain a dry bearing surface.
Based on the conditions encountered in the excavation of the shafts, it was determined that a new
method should be used in the completion of the piers. The holes were backfilled with cuttings and
will be redrilled at a later date when a new plan is developed.
