Attached are three design options for the channel that the Corps will probably permit. All
three options show a channel width and height based on an "n" factor of .025 and grass
bottom with concrete sides.
Gabion Wall: Olden provided this sketch. Grass bottom with 1:1 gabion side slopes.
Terraced Retaining Wall: I drew this sketch based on "Pavestone" details. The actual design
of the wall may be different. Grass bottom with two terraced retaining walls side slopes. The
planting space can be smaller than 3'.
Concrete Grid Wall: I drew this sketch based on "Pavestone" details. The actual design of
the wall may be different. Grass bottom with concrete grid side slopes. Loretta does not like
the grid walls because the vegetation does not always take hold and the walls fail.
All three options will have vegetation planted as part of the permit. The type of vegetation
planted will depend on the "n" factor. Please run a HEC2 for all three options with as high an
"n" factor as possible to allow for the construction of the channel within the drainage
easement. We may need a drainage easement wider than 50' on the north side of Bethel.
We will need this information for the meeting on the 17"'. We need to leave the meeting with
sufficient information to prepare the permit and proceed with the design of Bethel I & II. If
there is any information that you need from APAI or FNI, please let me know.
