Strength
BIG BLUE water pipes have long-term
hydrostatic strength that meet the
commonly accepted high safety re-
quirements of municipal water
systems. Conforms to cast iron O.D.'s
and is availaisle in 14" thru 24" in 235
psi; 14" thru 30" in 165 psi; and
only in 100 psi.

Light Weight
A 20 foot length of 16" DR25 BIG
~ water pipe weighs approxi-
..,.-ly 500 pounds. That makes it
,._,sy to load, easy to transport and
easy to handle. tnstallers prefer it
because it goes into the ground
quickly -- thus saving on install-
ation costs.
Long Laying Lengths
A standard laying length of PVC
water pipe is 20 feet. That means
you can cover a lot of ground during
installation. At the same time, you
eliminate the cost of unnecessary
joints.
Corrosion Resistance
BIG BLUE is unaffected by electro-
lytic or galvanic corrosion, or any
known soil or water condition. You
don't have to worry about tubercul-
ation, or the need for costly lining,
coating or cathodic protection.
Quality Control
Without exception, each length of
pipe is hydrostatically tested and
subject to inspection by our quality
control inspectors throughout every
step of the manufacturing process.
Flow Capacity
This PVC water pipe has a smooth
interior that stays smooth over long
years of service with no loss in
carrying capacity. its coefficient of
flow is C = 150 (Hazen &Willjams) --
the best available in common use in
water systems. This capacity often
allows savings in pumping costs as
well as savings on the size of pil:e
recl u i red.
· Service Life
Because it is nonmetallic, the pipe
does not lose strength due to either
, potable water corrosion or external
gaivanic or soil corrosion.
Ring-Tite Joints
BIG BLUEs Ring-Tite joint can be
assembled quickly. Seated in a
deed groove, the flexible elas-
tomeric ring provides a tight seal
that protects the line from shock,
vibration, earth movement and com-
pensates for expansion and con-
traction of pipe lengths. Its a siml31e
push-together joint that remains
tight under normal operating con-
ditions.
Color
Can be produced in brown or green
as needed to meet local code
requirements.

Cast Iron O.D.
Available in 14", 16", 18", 20", 24",
30" sizes, this pipe can be connected
directly into cast and ductile iron fit-
tings without adaptors or complicated
procedures. Dimensions should be
checked for use with butterfly valve.--'
Field Cutting
You can cut Big Blue with a power-
saw. It eliminates the need te invest
in costly cutting equipment.

Surge Pressures In
Various Pressure Pipes
It is important to notice that for the same conditions of
interrupted flow, the pressure surges generated in pipe with
high tensile toodull will be greater than the surges in low
moduli (PVC) pipe of similar dimensions.
As the modulus of tensile elasticity for a piping material
increases, the resultant pressure surge ("water-hammer')
caused by a change in flow velocity increases. For example,
an instantaneous 2 fps (0.6 m) flow velocity change in an
18 inch water main will create surge pressures as shown in
Table I for different pipe materials.

SHORT FORM INSTALLATION GUIDE
This information is furnished in order to provide a brief review
of the installation requirements for J-M Ring-Tite® PVC pipe.
1. Check to see that the rubber ring is properly seated in the bell
groove, and that the bell and spigot are clean before assembly.
2. Apply the approved lubricant to the spigot end of the pipe only
-- paying particular attention to the bevel. The coating should be
equivalent to a brush coat of enamel paint.
3. Assemble the joint to the reference mark only.
If undue resistance to insertion of the spigot is encountered, or
the reference mark does not reach the flush position, disassemble
the joint and check the position 'Of the rubber ring.
5. J-M's recommendation for 14" thru 30" Big Blue Only is that
the angular deflection at the joint is a maximum of 1.5 degrees.
This will produce an offset in a 20' section of approximately 61/=
inches.
6. Prior to backfilling, check to see that the reference mark is flush
with the end of the bell.
For a complete Installation Guide, contact your Distributor,
or call our Product Assurance Department at (800) 621-4404.

WARRANTY
J-M warrants that its standard products are manufactured
in accordance with its applicable material specifications
and are free from defects in workmanship and materials,
using J-M's specifications as a standard, Every claim under
this warranty shall be deemed waived unless in writing and
received by J-M within thirty (30) days of the date the
defect was discovered, and within one (1) year of the date
of the shipment. Claims for product appearance defects,
such as sunbleached pipe etc., however, must be made
within thirty (30) days of the date of the shipment. J-M
must first be given an opportunity to inspect the product
alleged to be defective in order to determine if it meets
J-M specifications and if the handling, installation, and
operating conditions have been satisfactory and in accor-
dance with J-M recommended practices. Products sold by

THERE ARE. BASICALLY TWO' (2) TYPES OF AIR VALVES:
TYPE 1.AIR & VACUUM VALVES (AVV) withO LARGE ORIFICE to vent large volumes of air for efficient filling and draining of
pipelines to protect against vacuum-water column separation or pipeline collapse.
TYPE 2. AIR RELEASE VALVES (ARV) with O SMALL ORIFICE for continuous venting of air pockets as they accumulate in the
pipeline.
When the above types are combined, the result is a COMBINATION AIR VALVE (CAV).
The COMBINATION AIR VALVE is available in a single body, as shown here, or in a duplex arrangement, see Back Page.
The single body is most popular due to its smaller overall size and resulting space saving inside a valve vault. However, it is only
available to size 8 inches.
HOW IT WORKS: Sizes ~" thru ." incorporate a popper <or p.ug~ which rests free,y inside the ,ever frame. The
center stem of the poppet has SMALL ORIFICE thru it. When water enters the main valve body, it raises the float and float arm which
puts the needle, attached to the arm, in contact with the poppet stem while lifting the poppet to the shutoff position against the
LARGE ORIFICE.
As air accumulates inside the main valve body, the water is displaced, the float arm falls away from the poppet stem to expose the
small orifice and the pocket of air is vented. Water re-enters the main valve body, lifting the float arm back to the shutoff position
and the cycle repeats, as air accumulates. As long as the main valve body is under pressure, the pop pet stays closed -- because
the pressure differential across the large orifice is more than the poppet can overcome -- hence the poppet stays closed.
However, for any reason a negative pressure occurs, inside the main valve body, the poppet will drop open to allow air in and
prevent vacuum from forming in the pipeline.
Size 8" functions in the same manner, but instead of a poppet, a float is used, for shutting off the large orifice and a separate internal
float operated lever mechanism is incorporated with a small orifice for venting pockets of air.
Every CAV is hydrostatically seat and shell tested before it leaves our factory to insure quality performance in the field.

pressures exceed 300 psi or size requirements exceed
SIZING
To determine the correct size Single Body or Duplex Body Combination Air
Valves to use on each high point of the pipeline, refer to Bulletin 610 or use the
APCO Air Valve Compute (available on request) or you may send a copy of your
pipeSins profile to our Engineering Department. A full report will be sent back to
you, usually within 72 hours after receipt of the profile.
*Another feature to recommend the use of Custom Combination Air Valves is the
~ide mounted Air Release Valve, can. be either of four (4) valves, shown in the
chart below. With each of the valves shown, the orifice is much larger. and hence
ihe venting capacity much greeter than the orifices in the single body Combination
Air Valve on Page ~02. This is important where large volumes of air are
anticipated after the pipeline is filled and operating.
