As the modulus of tensile elasticity for a piping material increases, the resultant pressure surge ("wafer-hammer") caused by a change in flow velocity increases. For example, an instantaneous 2 fps (0.6 m) flow velocity change in an 18 inch wa#er main will create surge pressures as shown in Table 1 for different pipe materials. American Flow Contro! tap- ping sleeves and saddles are de- signed to provide a safe, efficient means of connecting branch piping to existing lines, TAPPING SLEEVES The Series 2800 Compact Ductile Iron Tapping Sleeves are available in sizes 4"x4" through 12"x12° and 16"x 4" through 16"x12" with mechanical Joint ends for use on ductile Iron pipe and 4"x4" through 12"x12" for use on AC pipe. The Series 2806 sleeves feature full length, heavy duty, ductile Iron construction for maximum toughness and strength, Their compact construction makes them lighter and easier to handle. (yet, since they are made of ductile Iron they have twice the strength of cast Iron sleeves,) The Series 1004 MJ Ductile Iron Tapping Sleeves are available in sizes 14"x 4" through 36'x24". lhese sleeves can be furnished to fit old cost iron pipe and ductile iron pipe O.D.'s. It is necessary for the pur- chaser to measure the O.D. of the pipe before ordering to insure the proper size sleeve is provided. It is recommended that the tap- ping sleeve and tapping valve be manufactured by the same manu- facturer to assure the proper fit of the alignment ring on the tapping valve with the recess on the tapping sleeve. SAMPLE SPECS i TAPPING SLEEVES Tapping sleeves shall be ductile iron construction meeting ASTM A536 Grade 65-45-12. Side flange seals shall be of the O-ring type of either round, oval, or rectangular cross-sectional shape. Sizes 12" and smaller must be capable of working on Class ABCD pipe diameters without changing either half of sleeve. Sizes 14" and larger must be specified to which class is needed. All sleeves are to include the end Joint accessories and split glands necessary to assemble sleeve to pipe. No special tools to be required other than a standard socket wrench. The rubber gasket seals morn effectively if the surfaces with which it comes in contact are thoroughly cleaned just before assembly to remove all loose rust or foreign material. Lubrication and additional cleaning should be provided by brushing both the gasket and the plain end with soapy water or Pipe lubricant. Slidc the PVC Stargrip on the plain end, followed by the MJ gasket 2. After insertion of the pipe into the bell of the fitting, family press the gasket into the gasket recess. During this process the joint should be kept straight. 3. Slide the PVC Stargrip toward the MJ bell with the gland flp against the gasket. Insert T-bolts and hand tighten nuts. IMPORTANT: Make deflection after joint is assemhled but before tightening T-bolts. 4. While tightening T-bolts, it is essential that the gland be brought up toward the bell flange evenly, maintaining approximately the same distance between the gland and the face of the flange at all points around the socket. All T- bolts should be tightened until they are in within the torque range as listed in table. 5. Hand tighten the Torque- limitiag iwist-off Bolts in a clockwise direction rauil all wedges are in firm contact with the pipe surface. IMPORTANT: WYen installing sizes 4" throagh 12" on IPS PVC or Steel Pipe, We spacer washers mast be removed from the torque limiting bolts. 6. Continue tightening in an alternative manner until all of the Torque-Eimiting twist-off Balt heads have been twisted off: Never turn a single bott over 180 degrees without alternating to another bulk If removal is necessary, utilize the 1 I!4" hex head provided. If reassembly is required, assemble the joint in the same manner as above and tighten the wedge bolt to 90 ft. Ib. Note: If effective sealing is not attained at the maximum torque indicated, then the joint should be disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, and reassembled. Overstressing the bolts to comuertsate for poor installation practice is not acceptable. Restrainer mechanism shall be integrated into the design of the follower gland. As the mechanism is activated, multiple wedging action shall be imparted against the pipe increasing its resistance as internal pressure increases. After burial of the restraining mechanism, joint flexibility shall be maintained The actuating bolt shall be threaded into the restraining wedge and have a 1-1/4" across the flats hex head. The actuating bolt system shall have atorque-limiting head designed to break off at preset torque levels, thus insuring proper action of the restraining device. After removal ofthetorque-limiting head, a 1 1/4" hex head shal l remain to facilitate the removal and re-assembly of the gland. Glands shall be manufactured of high strenghth ductile iron in accordance with ASTM A536 Grade 65-45-12 requirements. Wedge mechanisms shall be heat treated ductile iron, hardened to at least 370 BHN hazdness. lble dimensions conforming to ANSI/AW WA C 111/A21.11, C 110/A21.10 and C 153/121.53 and shall be incorporated into the so that the device facilitates use with standard mechanical joint sockets. The restraining mechanism shall have a pressure rating equal to that of the pipe on which it is used and shall have a safety factor of at least 2:1. The restraining gland shall be listed by Underwriters Laboratories Inc., be approved by Factory Mutual Research, and conform to the requirements ofASTM F 1674, and LTNI-B-13-94. The rubber gasket will seal mote effectively if the surfaces with which it comes in contact are cleaned just before assembly to remove all loose rust or foreign material. Lubrication and additional cleaning should be provided by brushing both the gasket and the plaint end with soapy water or pipe lubricant. Slide the Stargrip on the plain eod, followed by tbe MJ gasket. 2. After insertion of the pipe into the bell of the fining, firmly press the gasket mio the gasket recess. During this process the joint should be kept straight. 3. Slide the Stargrip toward the MJ bell with the gland lip against the gaskek Insert T-bolts and hand tighten nuts. IMPORTANT: Make deflection atLtt joint is assembled but before tightening T-bolts. 4. When tightening bolts, it is essential that the gland be brought up toward the bell flange evenly, maintaining approximately the same distance between the gland and the face of the flange at all points around the socket. All T- bolts shouts be tightened until they are in within the range of torque's shown on page #3. ,., ,,.w`° I I '~ ..... i ~_ - 5. Hand tighten the torque limiting twist off tnna in a clockwise direction until all wedges are in firm contact with the pipe surface. 6. Continue tightening in an alternative manner umil all of the nuts have been twisted ofl: Never tum a single nut over 18Q degrees without aitemating to another nuk If removal is necessary, utilize the 5/8" hex head provided. If reassembly is required, assemble the joint in the same manner as above and tighten the wedge bolt to 90 ft. 16. Note: If effective sealing is not attained at the maximum torque indicated, then the joint should be disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, and reassembled. Overstressing rho bolts to compensate for poor installation practice is not acceptable. miner mechanism shall be integrated into the design ofthe follower gland. As the mechanism is activated, multiple wedging action be imparted against the pipe increasing its resistance as internal pressure increases. After burial of the restraining mechanism, flexl~ility shall be maintained. actuating bolt shall be threaded into the restraining wedge and have a 1-1/4" hex operating nut. The operating nut shall be ailed onto the actuating bolt, not swaged or riveted The restraining twist off nut bolt system shallhave atorque-limiting feature fined to break off at preset torque levels, thus inswing proper action of restraining device.
