ST9302-CS010420 MEMORANDUM FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGINEERING To: Jim Witt, City Manager Clay Phillips, Deputy City Manager From: Ken Griffin, P.E., Director of Engineering/Public Works Date: April 20, 2001 RE: MacArthur/Sandy Lake Intersection Sandy Lake Road Project ST 93-02 At our April monthly meeting with the contractor for Sandy Lake Road, Ed Bell Construction, a timetable for the reduction of the MacArthur Blvd./Sandy Lake Road intersection to one lane was discussed. It is the contractors intent to begin construction on that intersection on May 1, 2001. For approximately the first four months of construction, the northbound lanes on MacArthur Blvd. will be reduced to one lane. The initial phases of construction will not restrict southbound traffic. However, toward the end of summer work will begin on the southbound lanes of MacArthur Blvd. and they will also be reduced to one lane. Signage ~ill be placed this week alerting motorists that between May 1st and December 31st one lane will be closed and they should expect long delays and/or seek alternate routes. It is the contractors intent to begin work on the southeast quadrant of the intersection first. This is the corner closest to the vacant shopping center. The contractor has provided some cost for utilization of stamped concrete in the intersection as opposed to brick pavers. Utilization of the stamped concrete could save as much as 1 1/2 to 2 months offthe construction time. However, the tradeoff is that there could be an increase in cost of approximately $30,000 to $35,000. We are exploring this option further; however, we are on a short timeframe to inform the contractor of which route to take. As we have discussed, hopefully we will have an opportunity to discuss this at the April 24, 2001 City Council meeting. If you should have any questions please feel free to contact me. If not, I will keep you informed of any further development. "CITY OF COPPELL ENGINEERING - EXCELLENCE BY DESIGN"
