Admixtures.
.. ft...."..,.,.....,...".._."....""..."....."........_..__.__._____...____..........''''''''............_.'--_______......._____..._...._''''.".."
Applications
-_._--.----,~..,....'..'....~----
Sika AER can be used whenever air entrained concrete Is desired. Ready-
mix, precast and block producers can achieve optimum entrained air contents,
even where harsh mixes are used or fly-ash is added to the mix.
Sika AER is an effective and economical means to improve the paste quality
of lean concrete mixes.
Advantages Durability: Air entrainment is recognized as the most effective prevention
against concrete scaling in exposed environments. Air entrained concrete
delivers particular benefits in the form of increased concrete durability. This
is important in colder climates where frost and freeze-thaw cycles can cause
scaling and damage to the concrete surface.
Air entraining agents help to prevent scaling by creating millions of microscopic
air voids that water trapped in the concrete can expand into when the concrete
freezes, thus preventlng cracks caused by the natural expansion. Entrained air
voids in the concrete will also increase durability in harsh environments where
concrete is exposed to deicing salts, marine salts and sulfates.
Workability and Placeability: Workability and placeability are also improved
by the lubrfcating action of the microscopic bubbles in the concrete. The
concrete flows better, bleeding and shrinkage is reduced because lower water
content is needed for desired workabiHty.
It has been fonnulated and manufactured speCifically to provide stable and
predictable air contents in concrete, with uniform air bubble spacing through-
out the concrete matrix.
Dosage rates for Sika AER will typically fall between 0.5 and 1.5 fl. oz.l100
lbs, (32 - 97 ml/100 kg) of cementltlolJS to entrain between 4 and 6 percent air.
Higher air contents may be obtained by IncreasIng the dosage rate.
Dosage rates will vary depending on the air content required for a particular
project. Typically air contents will be specified in the range of 4 to 8 percent by
volume.
Other factors that may affect the amount of air entrained into the concrete
include, but are not limited to total cementitious content, type of pozzolanic
materials, sand gradation, temperature and water content. Srka recommends
that trial mixes be tested whenever material or any other changes are made
that may affect the amount of entrained air.

Mixing Measure the required quantity per batch man\Jally or with automatic dispenser
equipment. Add Sika AER to mixing water or sand. Do not mix with dry ea-
ment When used in combination with other admixtures, care must be taken to
dispense each admixture separately into the mix.
Combination with Other Admixtures;
Combination with other admixtures. particularly water reducers and retarders
will tend to Increase the amount of entrained air in the mix. Air contents should
be CheCked with an alr~meter after batching and dosage adjustments made at
the concrete plant.

Advantages Plastocrete 161 water reducing admixture provides an economical and highly
effective means of reducing the amount of mixing water required to produce
concrete of a certain slump by acting as a dispersant for the cement particles
in the mix.
Through this dispersing action more of the surface area of tl,e cement particles
Is available for early hydration. The more cement particles hydrated by contact
with thtl mixing water, the greateilr the compressive :strength of the concrete.
Plastocrete 161 Is formulated as a Type A water reducer to allow up to 10%
water reduction and maximize the benefits of increased hydration in both the
hardened and plastic states.
. Reduced water content required to ;;;lchieve desIred slump, increases
compressive and flexural strengths and allows the use of more eoonomi-
cal mixes.
.
Improved paste quality makes concrete easier to pump and finish.
Consistent normal setting times throughout the recommended dosage.
Lower water cement ratios provide decreased permeability and Increased
d~lrability.
Plastocrete 161 does not contain intentionally added chlorides and will
not initiate nor promote the corrosion of sleel in the concrete.

How to Use
Dosag@
Dosage rates will vary depending on the material used, ambient conditions
and the requirements of a specific project.
For general concreting applications, Slka recommends a dosage rate between
2-4 fl.oz.l100 Ibs. (130~260 ml/1 001(9) of cementitious materials for normal
setting characteristics. Dosage rates of 4-6 fl.oz.l100 lbs. (260~390 ml/1 00 kg)
of cement.itious materials are recommended for applications where higher
water reduction is needed as well as extended workability and prolonged
setting times.
Dosage rates outside the recommended range may be lJsed wl1ere
specialized materials such as mlcrosilica are specified, extreme ambient
conditions are encountered or unusual project conditions require special con-
sideration. 1n this case please contact your local regional Sika office or Sika
technical service department at 1 ~800~933~7452 for further information.

manually or by a~ltomated dispenser. Add into the water line at the batch plant
or to the mixer at the end of the batching cycle_
Combination with other Admixtures: Plastocrete 161 works effectively as a
single admixture or in combination with other admixtures in the Sika System.
When air entrained concrete is specified, Sika recommends the use oJ Sika air
entraining admixtures.
When used in combination with other admixtures, care must be taken to
dispense each admixture separately into the concrete, Do not mix with
dry cement.

Plastiment@
Water Reducing and Retarding Admixture
Oescrlption Pla;tlment is a water~reduclng-and retarding admlrlure.
..._.............................................._................ ......,.... ..............~.I.~.~:i~_=.~.t..~:.~~~..~~.~~~.~.~.!~=~=~~=...~~...~-~~.9.:::~._~~?.=~.._~_~..~.~_~.~......._.......... ..................
Applications Plastlment is recommended for USe whenever high quality concrete with pre-
dictable and controlled set times is desired. Use in f1atwork and horl.<:ontal or
vertical slipform pli:lcements where a superior surface finish is required.
-~ .,...., -~'\.",""
, Advantages Plastiment is highly effective in hot weather concreting to offset the accelerat-
ing effects of high ambient temperatures by slowing the hydration reaction and
controlling the hydration heat. Concrete workability is enhanced and a supe-
rior surface finish is obtained.
In mass concrete pours Plastlment controls temperatul'e rise and reduces the
risk of thermal cracking.
. Initial set tImes are d6layed, allowing time for propl'Jr placement and fin~
ishing without cold .joints In hOI weather conditions.
. Plastlmenllncreases concrete density and delivers increased early and
urtimate, compressive and flexural strengths.
. For f1atwork applications Plastiment acts as a finishing aid, workability is
improved. bleeding is controlled and a superior surface finish is obtained.
. Lower water cement ratios provide decreased permeability and increased
durability.
. Plastlment can be used to retard concrete during the hot weather con-
creting. Refer to ACI 305R Hot Weather Concreting for more Information.
Plastiment does not contain calcium cl,loride or any other intentionally added
chlorides.
Dosage rates will vary depending on the material used, ambient conditions
and the requirements of a specific project.
For general conc:re.tlng applications, Sika recommends a dosage rate
between 2-4 fl. 070./100 Ibs. (130-260 ml/100 kg) of cementltious materials.
Where extended retardation Is required dosage may be increased. Dosage
rates outside the recommended range may be used where specialized materi-
als such as microsilica are specified, extreme ambient conditions are encoun-
tered or unusual project conditions require special consideration. In this case
please contact your local regional Sika office or Sika technical service
department at 1-800-933-7452 for further information.
