Dear Mr. Smith:
In an effort to preserve landscaping on private property adjacent to the project we are
proposing to add some segmental block retaining walls to the project. I have worked up
some sketches showing the proposed cross section of the wall and the approximate
locations they will be needed. I have also included a pay item description and a detail for
your review.
According to my calculations this will be approximately 2,278 square feet of wall. We
are asking for a unit cost associated with this work. The inspector and the wall builder
will have to work together on the actual limits in the field, and the final payment would
be based on the unit price times the actual installed quantity.
By providing a unit price and using my calculated quantity we will establish a contract
change order amount that can be processed to begin the work.

2.1. Pay Items #I-CO X-I Segmental Retaining Wall:
This work includes the furnishing and installing of Pavestone Anchor Diamond Pro, or
approved equal, segmental retaining wall systems at the locations shown in the plans
or as established by the Engineer, in accordance with the appropriate details and
specifications, including the Technical Specifications and those of the manufacturer.
The CONTRACTOR shall submit shop drawings, product data, material samples and
a manufacturer's approved design for the proposed segmental retaining wall to the
Engineer for approval, prior to beginning construction in accordance with these
contract documents.
Retaining wall shall sit on an 18" wide 8" thick reinforced concrete footing as shown
in the detail provided. Concrete shall have a minimum compressive strength of
3600psi at 28 days. Reinforcement shall be 3 number 3 bars longitudinal and number
3 bars at 18" spacing transverse.
Wall shall have filter fabric and 12" free draining granular backfill with drain tile and
21/2" weep holes spaced at 20 foot centers. Blocks shall be neatly cut to
accommodate weep hole penetrations. Broken blocks will be rejected.
Wall shall be complete with appropriate cap block. Wall ends shall be turned into
adjacent slope.
Contractor shall provide City with color palette and face options prior to beginning
construction for approval.
Measurement and Payment for segmental retaining wall work performed and
materials furnished completed and in place as provided herein shall be made on the
basis of the price bid per square foot (SF) of block actually installed, and shall be
total compensation for furnishing and/or operating all labor, materials, tools,
equipment and other incidentals necessary to complete the work.
