Severe Weather - Tuesday 7/12/88
Below is a summary of the circumstances and actions taken by Public
Works during the referenced event.~
At approximately 6:45 p,m., the southwestern parts of the City
began receiving heavy rains which eventually amounted to between
2.5 and 6.0 inches throughout the City. The heaviest of these
rains appears to have fallen in the Northlake Woodlands areas
east of Moore, the Woodridge area around Hill and. Cherrybark
and S. Holly Street. The Shadow Ridge Estates, Whispering Hills
and Sandy Oaks areas also received moderate to heavy rains.
At 7:02 p.m. a report of high water was received mt the Service
Center and subsequent calls began coming at a regular.pace.
These calls reported high water at:
Deforest Rd.
Hill
MacArthur Boulevard @ Starleaf~
Sandy Lake
Samuel Blvd.
Mapleleaf
At 7:09 p.m. the storm
apparently put power out
began to give off frequent lightning that

at most major intersections.
I then asked that Brent Adams and the Water Call Units be paged.
I arrived at the Service Center and began dispatching crews as
they arrived to place barricades and assist citizens.
A report of water over the road was made by the water unit at
Sandy Lake and Whispering H~lls. The homes along Sandy Lake and
those along Shadydale were being flooded. Crews dispatched could
find no obstructions in the storm sewer lines. The ditches were
full and a solid sheet of water 3 inches deep and 75 to 150
long was going from the southern side of Sandy Lake to the northl
side. This water was attempting to merge with the= water coming
from Sandy Lake and Denton Tap, flooding the' southwest corner
of the Skaggs facility, flowing north to Cottonwood Creek.
High water was then reported at these locations and Public Works
addressed each as it is stated:
Moore Road at Stringfellow; Cars were flooded in this area but
no one knew the owners. Moore Road was blocked to allow water'
to clear quickly, alleviating the standing water.
Standing water at Denton Tap and Parkway blocked this intersection
for some 4 hours. The east side of Denton Tap Road was barricaded
to show the edge of the roadway and a sign stating, "Water Over
Road" was placed along the northbound southbound traffic lanes.
For approximately 1 hour at this area, traffic was controlled
through the direction of an employee to assist with safe
crossing/switching of lanes due to the water.
Several trees were blown down as were street lights in residential
areas. An employee was dispatched to move the trees from a roadway
and report the lights to the appropriate utility company.
Four homes in the area of Shadydale (100, 120, 132 & 136) were
reported to have received damage from high water. These were
confirmed by mn employee sent to assist whose list' is attached.
The residents took a good deal of pictures according to the
employee.
Two homes, 767 and 771 Pelican, were flooded as well.
also lost power perhaps due to the water.

The staff at Public Work~ monitored Channel 3 and worked with
the Police to address any circumstance required. Six employees
of the department worked until 11:00 p.m. to assure that the
public's safety was not in danger. Ail traffic signals out due
