LOW PRESSURE AIR TEST FOR GRAVITY SANITARY SEWER
Test Procedures
Each section of sewer shall be tested between successive manholes.
Air shall be introduced into the pipeline until 4.0 psi gauge pressure has been reached. At that time the
flow of air shall be reduced and the internal air pressure shall be maintained between 3.5 and 4.5 psi
gauge for at least two (2) minutes to allow the air temperature to come to equilibrium with the
temperature of the pipe walls. Pressure in the pipe shall be constantly monitored by a gauge and hose
arrangement separate from the hose used to introduce air into the line. Pressure in the pipe shall not be
allowed to exceed 5 psi.
After the temperature has stabilized and no air leaks at the plugs have been found, the air pressure shall
be used to determine that time lapse required for the air pressure to drop to 2.5 psi gauge.
If the time lapse required for the air pressure to decrease from 3.5 to 2.5 psi exceeds that shown in the
following table, the pipe shall be presumed to be within acceptable limits for leakage.
If the time lapsed is less than that shown in the table, the contractor shall make corrections to reduce the
leakage to acceptable limits.
