Dear Mr. Powell,
As you may be aware, a problem has arisen during construction of
the Shopping Center at the corner of Sandy Lake and Mac^rthur
Boulevard. Specifically, the issue revolves around those exist-
ing pecan trees to remain.
If you recall, one of the primary requirements of the City Coun-
cil during Site Plan approval was the retention of as many exist-
ing pecan trees as possible. During construction document
production a detail was generated by our offices that increased
the ability of the tree to survive. It entailed coring one inch
holes into the slab beneath a waterproof barrier, which had extra
reinforcing to support the three foot spacing of these cores
beneath the actual dripline of the tree. This condition would
remain for a period of three years at which time it was recom-
mended that the holes be filled. This encourages the tree to
develop an alternate nourishment system closer to the trunk since
each tree is surrounded by a planter. This is important since
pecan trees are especially sensitive to changes in their environ-
ments. This detail is currently being used not only in the main
shopping center but in each of the outparcels as well.
During construction, a city inspector red flagged that portion of
the Work and initially would not allow this detail to be used at
all fire lane conditions. It was later expanded and currently
this detail will not be allowed by the Engineering Department at
any location.

We have taken care to protect and maintain these trees to the
best of our abilities to satisfy the requirements of the City
Council. Your prompt assistance in resolving this matter would
be greatly appreciated. We will be happy to discuss alternatives
to our detailing at your earliest convenience. A copy of the
detail in question has been included for your review.
