RE:
JP No. 88009; Preliminary Plat -
Parkway Boulevard (West);
Coppell, Texas
Dear Taryon:
Approval of the referenced Preliminary Plat by the City of
Coppell Planning and Zoning Commission on September 19, 1988
included a stipulation that an additional 10 feet of Right-of-Way
should be included in Parkway Boulevard on each side to yield 105
feet total Right-of-Way width within 300 feet of the Denton Tap
Road intersection.
ABQ Development Corporation wishes to comply with the requirement
of the Planning and Zoning Commission. We will provide the
Right-of-Way for Parkway Boulevard as requested on the Final
Plat. However, we feel it inadvisable to utilize the additional
10 feet on the north side of Parkway Boulevard as a future
Acceleration Lane for west bound traffic. A disruptive and maybe
even hazardous situation may result when traffic is given the
opportunity to accelerate and merge into a through lane shortly
after a turning maneuver. Therefore we recommend that the
ultimate intersection design require that traffic turning west
onto Parkway Boulevard from Denton Tap Road ascertain that it is
safe to merge directly into a through lane prior to completing
the turning maneuver by omitting any acceleration lane adjacent
to Parkway Boulevard at this location.
A discussion of Acceleration and Deceleration Lanes is given on
pages 843 through 846 of A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways
and Streets, 1984, American Association of State Highway and
Transportation Officials.
