Dear Mr. Pross:
As discussed in our telephone conversation, it is our opinion that the behavior of
the structural framing of a typical warehouse building during a significant fire event
is as follows:
· Once a fire breaks out, the sprinkler system is activated suppressing the fire.
· If sufficient heat accumulates, the steel joists and joist girders of the roof
structure soften and collapse.
· During the collapse, the steel joists and girders that are connected to the
perimeter wall panels exert an inward force on the top of the panels, which
will cause the top of the panels to laterally deflect inward.
· If the eccentricity of the lateral deflections exceeds the flexural capacity of
the panel at the connection with the floor slab and foundation, then the
panels will collapse inward. Otherwise, the panels will remain standing as a
cantilever.
It is our opinion that the panels will not typically collapse outward without an
external outward force being applied to the panels once the panels are standing as
cantilevers, such as an outward wind gust.
