GENERAL PLANTING NOTES
1. QUANTITIES NOTED REPRESENT LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS ESTIMATE ONLY.
CONTRACTOR SHALL VERIFY ALL QUANTITIES OF PLANT MATERIAL AS WELL AS
MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS SUCH AS EDGING, BED PREPARATIONS AND MULCH PRIOR TO
BIDDING AND PROVIDE REVISED QUANTITIES AT TIME OF BID.
2. CONTRACTOR SHALL EXAMINE ALL AREAS AND CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH WORK IS
TO BE PERFORMED. NOTIFY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT OF ANY CONDITIONS
DETRIMENTAL TO PROPER AND TIMELY COMPLETION OF WORK.
3. PLANT MATERIAL SHALL BE MEASURED AND SIZED ACCORDING TO LATEST EDITION OF
THE TEXAS NURSERY & LANDSCAPE ASSOCIATION (TNLA) SPECIFICATIONS, GRADES
AND STANDARDS.
4. HANDLE ALL PLANT MATERIALS IN ACCORDANCE WITH BEST HORTICULTURAL
PRACTICES SO THAT ROOTS AND ROOT BALLS ARE ADEQUATELY PROTECTED FROM
MECHANICAL INJURY, SUN, DRYING WINDS, AND ANY OTHER DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS.
PLANTS SHALL NOT BE BOUND WITH NYLON ROPE OR WIRE IN A MANNER THAT WOULD
DAMAGE BARK, BREAK BRANCHES OR DESTROY THEIR NATURAL SHAPE. l
5. BED PREPARATION FOR ALL BEDS IS AS FOLLOWS:
5.a. TILL SUBGRADE TO A 6" TO 8" DEPTH TO BREAK HARDPAN. FLOOD WITH WATER
TO INSURE GOOD DRAINAGE. IF GOOD DRAINAGE DOES NOT EXIST, STOP WORK
AND NOTIFY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT.
5.b. APPLY 3" OF GENERAL COMPOST AND 1" AND EXPANDED SHALE ACROSS ENTIRE
BED.
5.c. TILL INTO BED TO A DEPTH OF 12" TO CREATE A FINE, LOOSE, FRIABLE SOIL
SUITABLE FOR PLANTING.
5.d. FINISHED BED SHALL BE MOUNDED IN THE CENTER OR HIGH IN THE REAR OF BED
TO INSURE GOOD DRAINAGE TAKING INTO ACCOUNT FOR SETTLEMENT AND
DISPLACEMENT FROM SHRUBS.
DO NOT DAMAGE ROOTS OF EXISTING TREES. MINIMIZE PREPARATION/TILLING UNDER
EXISTING TREE CANOPIES. HAND TILL WITHIN DRIPLINE OF EXISTING TREES. NO
TILLING WITHIN 8' RADIUS OF EXISTING TREE TRUNK.
6. TREE PITS SHALL HAVE ROUGHENED SIDES AND BE MINIMUM TWO TIMES WIDER THAN
THE ROOT BALL.
7. CONTRACTOR SHALL INSURE THAT PROPER DRAINAGE EXISTS IN ALL TREE PITS. FILL
PIT FULL OF WATER PRIOR TO PLANTING. IF AFTER A 24 HOUR PERIOD, WATER HAS
NOT DRAINED OUT, PUMP WATER OUT, DRILL A 6" HOLE IN LOW SIDE OF BOTTOM OF
PIT, BREAK THROUGH HARDPAN, ADD PEA GRAVEL, FABRIC AND A 4" SUMP PIPE.
CONTRACTOR SHALL NOTIFY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT OF ANY DRAINAGE ISSUES.
8. PLANT TREES SUCH THAT THE BOTTOM OF THE ROOT FLARE SITS VISIBLY, 6" ABOVE
FINISHED GRADE BEYOND THE PLANTING RING.
9. BACKFILL ALL TREE PITS WITH NATIVE TOPSOIL FREE OF ANY ROCK OR OTHER
NON-NATIVE DEBRIS. BURLAP, TWINE AND WIRE BASKETS SHALL BE COMPLETELY
REMOVED PRIOR TO BACKFILLING.
10. PROVIDE A MINIMUM 2" LAYER OF SHREDDED HARDWOOD AND PINE STRAW MULCH
MIXTURE OVER ALL COMPLETED PLANTINGS AND A 34" LAYER OVER TREE ROOT
BALLS. PULL BACK 1-2" FROM TRUNK OF ALL TREES,
11. CONTRACTOR SHALL ADD AN APPROVED FERTILIZER APPROPRIATE TO NEW PLANTING
AND LAWN TURF THAT IS APPROPRIATE TO SEASON OF YEAR.
12. CONTRACTOR SHALL REMOVE ALL DEBRIS GENERATED BY WORK OPERATIONS. LEAVE
ENTIRE PLANTING AREA IN A RAKED CONDITION FREE OF DEBRIS AND ALL PAVED
AREAS ADJOINING THE PLANTING AREAS IN A BROOM CLEAN CONDITION READY FOR
FINAL ACCEPTANCE.
13. THE OWNER, TENANT, AND/OR THEIR AGENTS, IF ANY, SHALL BE JOINTLY AND
SEVERALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MAINTENANCE, ESTABLISHMENT, AND
PERMANENCE OF PLANT MATERIAL. ALL LANDSCAPING SHALL BE MAINTAINED IN A
NEAT AND ORDERLY MANNER AT ALL TIMES. THIS SHALL INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED
TO, MOWING, EDGING, PRUNING, FERTILIZING, WATERING, AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
NECESSARY FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF LANDSCAPED AREAS.
14. ALL PLANT MATERIAL SHALL BE MAINTAINED IN A HEALTHY GROWING CONDITION AS IS
APPROPRIATE FOR THE SEASON OF THE YEAR. PLANT MATERIAL THAT IS DAMAGED,
DESTROYED, OR REMOVED SHALL BE REPLACED WITH PLANT MATERIAL OF SIMILAR
SIZE AND VARIETY WITHIN 30 DAYS.
15. CONTRACTOR SHALL GUARANTEE ALL PLANTING FOR ONE (1) YEAR AFTER FINAL
ACCEPTANCE. OWNER SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROPER MAINTENANCE OF
PLANTS AFTER FINAL ACCEPTANCE. DEAD MATERIALS NOT IN VIGOROUS, THRIVING
CONDITION SHALL BE REPLACED WITHIN 15 DAYS OF NOTIFICATION. REPLACE PLANTS
WHICH HAVE PARTIALLY DIED, THEREBY DAMAGING SHAPE, SIZE OR SYMMETRY.
PLANTS SHALL BE REPLACED WITH SAME KIND AND SIZE AS ORIGINALLY PLANTED AT
NO ADDITIONAL COST T
0 OWNER. CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE ONE 1 YEAR
GUARANTEE ON FIRST REPLACEMENT OF PLANT ONLY.
